Jane Ellison MP welcomes decision to release Shaker Aamer

25 September 2015

Jane Ellison, Member of Parliament for Battersea, has welcomed the news that her constituent, Shaker Aamer, is to be released from Guantanamo Bay and returned to his family in the UK.

Commenting, Jane said: “I very much welcome the decision to release my constituent, and, in particular, the news will come as a great relief to his wife and children in Battersea. I thank the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary, and the team at the Foreign Office for their work in consistently raising Mr Aamer’s case with the US administration. His lawyers and many campaigners have worked tirelessly to see him released, and I am especially grateful to the cross-party delegation of MPs who raised his case directly in Washington earlier this year.”

Since she was elected as Battersea’s MP in 2010, Jane has campaigned vigorously for Mr Aamer’s release to his family in London. As part of her campaign, Jane has met with Foreign Office Ministers, the US Ambassador to London, and a US Secretary of Defense, as well as writing directly to President Obama. In Parliament, as a backbencher, she led a debate in 2013, backed by a public petition of over 117,000 signatures. A subsequent debate earlier this year saw a Parliamentary motion calling for his release approved unanimously.

As constituency MP for the Aamer family, Jane has kept them regularly updated on all Parliamentary and other activity on Mr Aamer’s behalf.

My priorities for Battersea, Balham and Wandsworth
Improving local travel by continuing investment in public transport, including more mainline train and bus capacity & new tube stops in Battersea
Helping every child have the best start in life, with more great local schools & fewer children brought up in workless households
Ensuring our high streets are lively and attractive by supporting local businesses & championing community pubs
